DAY 01. Gabriel García Márquez’s Riohacha
Arrival at the Almirante Padilla International Airport in Riohacha, the Touristic and Cultural District, Suchiimma, in the native language (village of the river), Capital of the La Guajira department. There, our delegates will be waiting to welcome you and provide relevant information about your trip. Transfer to the hotel. Check-in at the hotel. Accommodation in Riohacha (Dinner not included).
DAY 02. Riohacha-URIBIA– PUNTA GALLINAS (La Guajira is desert, trade winds, beaches, sea)
7:00 a.m., departure to Uribia, known as the Indigenous Capital of Colombia. Visit Plaza Colombia, where all the administrative and political activities of the municipality are concentrated. In this town, you can observe how Wayuu men and women interact in commercial activities where Wayuu customs mix with Arijunas (non-Wayuu). We continue our journey to Upper Guajira through tracks and desert plains, allowing us to observe the unique landscapes of Bahía de Portete and Bahía Honda. Halfway, after covering kilometers of dusty stretches, we reach the Pusheo or Kan Kan Ranchería. A place located in Bahía Honda. 1:00 p.m. Lunch at Bahía Honda: This break is determined to rest and enjoy a typical lunch, prepared by Wayuu women, who offer various options. From Bahía Honda, we take the road again to approach distant plateaus visible on the horizon. Amidst sand dunes, stones, hills, cardon cacti, and trupillos, the Taroa dunes gradually come into view. 4:00 p.m., Visit the beautiful dunes and beaches of Taroa. The beach and the sea at your feet, the vastness of the desert and the Caribbean Sea make it an amazing place to enjoy. The Punta Gallinas lighthouse, essentially, the first portion of Colombian continental territory, is an ideal place to watch a spectacular sunset. 5:30 p.m. Arrival at the Lodge: The rancherías have enabled lodging arrangements (typical constructions) to accommodate tourists. Check-in at the Wayuu lodge. (After dinner, you can enjoy a calm and sublime peace, where you will find the most beautiful and starry sky in front of the Bay, here you can disconnect from the real world and immerse yourself in a world of total fantasy accompanied by shooting stars and thousands of constellations).
DAY 03. Bahía Hondita – Bahía Honda and Cabo de la Vela
Sunrise in the northernmost part of South America… Opening your eyes… it’s easy to feel in a place designed to dream. Feeling the sea, feeling the new sun rays warm the blood, and the gentle breeze caress the skin, allows you to define that you are in a magical place. 7:00 a.m. Breakfast at Punta Gallinas. 8:00 a.m. We will continue our journey to Cabo de La Vela, facing an unpaved road and using tracks (roads) that allow you to experience a Rally-type journey aboard 4×4 trucks. The journey includes a stop in the desert and constant travel through sand dunes that disappear into the horizon and die in the sea, dotted with fishermen’s rancherías. The landscape simply invites appreciation and, for lovers of images, it offers all the guarantees to take spectacular photographs. 1:00 p.m. Arrival at Cabo de La Vela and everything will be ready to serve the flavors of this place with a typical lunch. (Shrimp or Fish Rice, Meat, Chicken, accompanied by Rice, salad, plantain, and a drink) 4:00 p.m. Visit the Ojo de Agua Beaches, where we will enjoy the most exotic desert landscapes that blend with the immensity of the Caribbean Sea. A contrast of colors is usually offered with and after sunset in Cabo de la Vela. 6:00 p.m. Back at the Lodge, everything will be ready again to serve the flavors of this place with a typical dinner. Night falls and the stars come out to tell unusual stories, while shooting stars disappear into the sea or the desert. Dinner and lodging in Wayuu rancherías Utta or Apalanchiis.
DAY 04 – Cabo de la Vela – Manaure Salt Flats – Riohacha. Recharge your energy in Jepira, a sacred place of the Wayuu, – Kaimaichi Hill
7:00 a.m., breakfast at the ranchería. 8:00 a.m., visit to Punta Arcoíris. This is a place with strong winds, which exert pressure on the sea producing large waves that hit the coastline (cliffs) vigorously, generating water uplift in the environment, which, when crossed by the bright sun, allows us to experience a horizon of this optical and meteorological phenomenon (Rainbow). 9:00 a.m. Visit to Cerro Pilón de Azúcar, prepare to revitalize yourself in Jepira (a sacred Wayuu place). Undertake a hike to the top of Kaimaichi or Sugar Loaf Hill. According to Wayuu mythology, this is the place where the souls of Wayuu men and women arrive after death to meet “Mareiwa” (the Creator God). Here, there is also access to a sea bath and enjoyment of the golden sand beaches located at the base of the Sugar Loaf Hill.
11:00 a.m. We will continue our journey to the Manaure Salt Flats. Descending from Upper Guajira to Middle Guajira continues to witness violent waves, white sandy beaches, calm bays, and all types of terrain offered by the immense desert, from loose talcum-like sand, large and small stones, streams, lagoons, and huge salt flats where the horizon is lost. In Manaure, a tour of the Charcas (salt harvesting areas) allows you to observe Wayuu indigenous people in their daily tasks in the production process of marine salt in artisanal pools. Lunch in Manaure, Delight yourself with the flavors of La Guajira, immerse yourself in its myths and legends… Wayuu Culture. After lunch, we will move to the Walapuinaje community where we will have a magical encounter with our Wayuu ethnicity; We start with a talk that will transport us to the fantastic and mystical world of the Wayúu culture, presentation of typical dances, tasting of one of their typical dishes “El Frichi” Fried Goat; tour of the ranchería where they live; exhibition and sales of handicrafts, where we will have the opportunity to see how they make their crafts.
